Hello, my name is Vern Wittenberg, and I am proud to announce my candidacy for Clearwater County Sheriff.

After starting my career in Clearwater County, I was appointed to the position of Chief Deputy in 2017 by retiring Sheriff Darin Halverson, and I have served honorably under his command since that time. I have worked daily to support our deputies, ensure accountability, and maintain the high standards our community expects.

Experience that Matters

My law enforcement career began right here in Clearwater County in 2002 as a Communications & Corrections Officer. In 2003, I was hired as a part-time Deputy under Sheriff Denny Trandem.

After gaining experience with the Leech Lake Tribal Police Department, I served the citizens of Thief River Falls as a full-time Patrol Officer for more than 12 years before returning home to serve Clearwater County.

Today, as Chief Deputy, I serve as second-in-command to the Sheriff, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Sheriff’s Office. My responsibilities include managing personnel, coordinating law enforcement activities, assisting with budget oversight, and participating in long-term strategic planning.

With 24 years of operational law enforcement experience, I bring proven leadership and a deep, working knowledge of how the Sheriff’s Office serves our community—on the street and behind the scenes.

Rooted in Clearwater County

I was born and raised on a farm outside of Gonvick, where I still live with my family today. I am a graduate of Clearbrook-Gonvick School and earned my Law Enforcement degree from Hibbing Community College.

My wife Kari and I are proud to be raising our daughter, Peyton, here in Clearwater County. I am currently serving my second term on the Clearbrook-Gonvick School Board and spend my free time with family, hunting, fishing, motorcycling, and enjoying our cabin on Long Lost Lake.

A Family Tradition of Service

Law enforcement runs deep in my family. My mother, Maxine Wittenberg, served Clearwater County from 1978 until her retirement in 2004. My brother, Dick Wittenberg, dedicated his career to public safety, retiring as Captain of Minnesota State Patrol District 3200 and later serving as Chief of Police in Thief River Falls.

That legacy of service has shaped who I am and how I lead.
